Doyalson vs BUFC B North Match Report

Round 7 saw us playing away against another unknown opponent in Doyalson and just to add some further interest to the encounter, it was also first versus second on the ladder, with top spot going to the winner.

Our pre game talk was largely about focusing on our game plan and not worrying about league positions and despite being slightly down on numbers due to providing back-ups for our 45’s teams, we felt we still had enough firepower to do the job. When Jorge scored after 40 seconds following some great interplay between Lee and Frank, we thought that our task might be easier than we had perhaps feared but as the half continued it became clear why our opponents were justifiably top of table before kick off. What can only be described as an arm wrestle of a half ensued, with both teams largely cancelling each other out and although it would be fair to say that we were still creating the better of the limited chances, we were unable to take advantage of them, so it remained 1-0 at the break.

The second half largely followed the same pattern, although we were able to create two very good chances to extend our lead but both unfortunately went begging. That Geoff only really had a couple of routine saves to make all game, speaks to the solidity of our defence and we never really felt in danger of conceding although at only 1-0 up, there is always a nagging doubt that you could end throwing the three points away! Whilst it certainly wasn’t our best performance of the season so far, it was our first clean sheet (finally!), which was very welcome and sometimes, you just have to grind a result out. Our second half fitness is about there now, so things are coming together really nicely, although now we have top spot the target will be on our backs, so it will be interesting to see how we deal with that.

The man of the match award was shared between John and Chippa, who were both standouts on the day for differing reasons. Dougie “it took a bobble before I hit it – honest” White, was awarded the Scrotum medal for his attempt on goal that ended up only threatening the corner flag!
