BUFC B’s vs Gosford
Round 7 saw us play our only scheduled home game at Duffy’s Oval against Gosford and we were all looking forward to seeing how $200,000 dollars’ worth of pitch would be to play on. Whilst the surface didn’t feel like we were playing on carpet, it was nonetheless in good shape despite some overnight rain, which hopefully shows that the much needed drainage upgrades were worthwhile.
Gosford have always been tough, gritty opponents and with them being just 1 point below us in the mid table rankings, the outcome was likely to have a big bearing on the finals placings come August. Whilst the first half was pretty even, with both sides creating decent chances, including an unfortunate penalty miss by Jorge, after Gregor was felled in the area after 5 minutes of play. Several long range efforts, most notably from Jorge and Barry, forced the Gosford keeper into some flying saves meaning the half ended goalless.
Despite only having one substitute for the second half, we knew that we were playing well enough to overcome our opponents and when we were awarded our second penalty of the game 10 minutes in to the half, Frank efficiently despatched the resultant spot kick to break the deadlock. With the seal finally off the opposition’s goal, we went in search of more goals and Jorge duly doubled our lead with a great headed finish from a corner, before getting his second shortly after with a great turn and shot from 18 metres. In the end we ran out comfortable winners and could have possibly added to our tally but for some decent defending and saves by Gosford, however, we were happy enough with 3 goals scored and our third clean sheet of the campaign.
Man of the match was Barry, whose constant irreverent Irish humour out on the pitch keeps us chuckling all game! There were a number of suggestions that Micky should rate an honourable mention, given that he only played the first half, although any suggestions that the team played better after his departure is surely only coincidental??
Final Score: Barnstoneworth 3 – Gosford 0
