BUFC B North vs Wyong Match Report

Round 1 saw Barnstoneworth 35BN’s hosting Wyong at Duffy’s oval, which was looking positively verdant, after the off season. Wyong were new to the split 35B’s comp, so we had no knowledge of the threat they might carry, which made for a nice challenge after a number of years playing largely the same teams.

A 2.45PM kick off saw temperatures still hovering around the 30-degree mark, so rotations in the midfield was always going to be key to maintaining energy levels and given some good recruitment in the lead up to the season, we were probably better placed than ever to deal with that challenge.

A fairly even start to the game saw both teams probing for weaknesses and few chances but Wyong were able to grab the lead on 15 minutes due to an unfortunate goalkeeping error, which was very disappointing. Our response was almost immediate however, with Jorge rising to meet a great cross and heading in off the underside of the crossbar. Once back on level terms, we proceeded to largely control the game and were it not for the inspired form of the Wyong keeper, we would have been out of sight in short order, with numerous chances created. It was therefore no real surprise when John thundered a 25-metre shot into the far side netting to take us to the break 2-1 up.

The second half saw more of the same, with several players going close to extending our lead before Jorge again rose highest to meet a peach of a cross from Mick to head his second goal of the game. A great effort from one of the shortest guys on the pitch, which sees him pick up from where he left off last season and on this form, he must be a good shout for another golden boot award. As would be expected in round 1, both teams tired somewhat in the final 20 mins and despite Wyong creating a good chance from one set piece, we were able to comfortably see the game out for a deserved 3-1 win and three points to kick off our campaign.

As an indication of the solid all round team performance, the man of the match award was shared by players at both ends of our formation in Jorge and John.

Final Score: Barnstoneworth B North 3 – 1 Wyong
